You have heard of people walking in a desert who see in the distance the beautiful sight of cool, clear water. They run as fast as they can and when they reach the spot they saw the water, there is more desert. It was a mirage. Their vision was hazy because of heat, exhaustion, and dehydration.
I have experienced some hazy vision this week with my glaucoma attack. I looked across the room at my children and could only see a shape of a child but no distinguishing features. It was like looking at a shadow of who my child was. Fun fact, I actually guessed wrongly because the child was doing something they shouldn’t. I reprimanded the child I thought it was but because of my hazy vision, I got it wrong and reprimanded the wrong child.
Isn’t there a huge spiritual application for us in this? If we are not abiding in Christ and staying connected to Him, our vision gets hazy. We start seeing things that look good and running towards them only to discover they weren’t what we had thought they were. Or we really can’t tell who the person is we are trying so hard to please or impress, and when our vision clears we realize that the person was not who we thought they were at all.
Literally the only way to have clear vision is through abiding in Christ and staying close to Him. He has perfect vision. He will lead us to the gentle watersthat truly are cool, clear, and refreshing (Psalm 24), He will show us true friend (Prpv 12:26). He will illuminate our path so that we do not stumble one time even with our hazy vision (Ps 119:105).
As we walk with the Lord those mirages become realities.
